What is Tencel/Lyocel?

Tencel is a fiber that is man made from wood pulp, which means it is fully biodegradable. The wood pulp that is used to produce Tencel is harvested from tree-farmed trees that have been planted on land that is not suitable for food crops or grazing.

The process that is used to turn the wood pulp to yarn, has also been carefully planned to be environmentally friendly. In what is referred to as a “closed loop” system, the solvent used to produce Tencel is continually reused. Thus minimizing the amount of water and energy needed to produce this new fiber.

Not only is Tencel environmentally friendly, but is has been designed to be a lovely and wearable fiber.  It was conceived with the best attributes of other man-made and natural fibers in mind.  Tencel is said to be “soft as silk, strong as polyester, cool as linen, warm as wool, and as absorbent as cotton.”
