Some things to consider when substituting a yarn.

Working a pattern in a different yarn than the garment is pictured in can provide a whole different look to the garment. I decided that in order to choose a yarn for a second bolero, I would need to swatch not only for gauge, but to see how the panel pattern would translate in another yarn.

I swatched a few of my other favorite CE yarns to decide which I would use to knit the second, more casual version of my Bolero. I have narrowed it down to two yarns—both with which I can get the same gauge as Intrigue, but each provide very different finished looks.

The first is Lush in color 4427 Blackberry Wine. The darker color and the angora in the yarn makes the stitch pattern less prominent and provides an overall more even looking fabric. In this yarn the lace pattern becomes less visible from afar and a pleasant surprise upon closer inspection. The incredible softness of Lush is also a big plus.

The second swatch is knit in Waterlily color 1925 Abbey Road. I love the kettle dyed look of this yarn. At first I wasn’t sure that it would work with the lace panel, but I love the result!  The twist of this 100% merino wool provides wonderful stitch definition and a lovely spring to the yarn. The swatch in Waterily has the most casual look of the three yarns and would be a great compliment to jeans.

Doing all this research has made me want to knit 2 more of these boleros!
