How to make a vertical chain:

In the MinnowMerino Holiday Dog Coat pattern, Jil Eaton uses some crocheted vertical chains to create a plaid-looking fabric. Here's how:

Step 1: Knit the fabric as described in the pattern. Choose one purled rib to work with first. (Photo 1)

Step 2: Insert the crochet hook into the rib, just above the garter stitch border, near the cast on edge. Make a slipknot with the yarn, and put the loop onto the hook. (Photo 2)

Step 3: Pull loop through the fabric. (Photo 3)

Step 4: Insert the crochet hook into the fabric again, one row above where previously inserted. Wrap yarn over hook. (Photo 4)

Step 5: Pull yarn through fabric and loop already on the hook. (Photo 5)

Repeat steps 4 and 5 all the way up the rib. Fasten off. (Photo 6)
