Lace Knitting - Decreases:
The Interlude Wrap pattern uses two kinds of single decreases, ssks and k2togs. Remember that an ssk decrease slants to the left and a k2tog slants to the right. Once you’re knitting, you’ll see that the different decreases provide subtle texture interest. Alternating decreases in each diamond create an undulating pattern. If you’re lucky enough to have all the time in the world this summer, try working the pattern with only one kind of decrease and compare the effect with the original.
Right Slanting Decreases
k2tog(Knit 2 stitches together) Insert the right-hand needle into the second stitch on the left-hand needle as if to knit, then insert it up through the first stitch on the left-hand needle as if to knit. Wrap the yarn over, and pull through both stitches on left-hand needle (1 stitch decreased).
p2tog(Purl 2 stitches together) When viewed from the RS, this decrease st will slant right. With the WS facing, insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch on the left-hand needle as if to knit, then insert it up through the second stitch on the left-hand needle as if to purl. Wrap the yarn over, and pull through both stitches on left-hand needle (1 stitch decreased).
Left Slanting Decreases
ssk(slip, slip, knit) Slip 2 stitches, 1 at a time knitwise to the right-hand needle; return them to the left-hand needle in the turned position. Insert the right-hand needle into both stitches as if to knit through the back loop. Wrap the yarn over, and pull through both stitches on let-hand needle (1 stitch decreased).
ssp(slip, slip, purl) When viewed from the RS, this decrease will slant left. With WS facing, slip 2 stitches, 1 at a time knitwise to the right-hand needle; return them to the left-hand needle in the turned position. Insert the right-hand needle into both stitches as if to purl through the back loop. Wrap the yarn over, and pull through both stitches on let-hand needle (1 stitch decreased).
