Grafting two pieces together using the Kitchener Stitch:

Grafting is used to join two pieces together without binding off. Stitches are kept "live" on the needle, or on a stitch holder until ready to join. It is commonly used at the toe of socks or shoulder seams on baby garments to prevent a bulky seam from getting in the way.

• Align your two pieces on two separate needles so the wrong sides of each piece are facing each other and both needles are pointing in the same direction (photo 1).

• Step 1: Bring threaded tapestry needle through the first stitch on the front needle as if to knit (photo 2). Slip this stitch off the needle.

• Step 2: Bring threaded tapestry needle through next stitch on front needle as if to purl and leave this stitch on the needle (photo 3).

• Step 3: Bring threaded tapestry needle through the first stitch on the back needle as if to purl (photo 4). Slip this stitch off the needle.

Repeat Steps 1–4 until there are no stitches remaining on the needles.
