Crocheting a single crochet and single crochet through the back loop:

A single crochet is a basic crochet stitch. It's a short stitch that creates a thick dense fabric when worked in rows. It is also used throughout many creative stitch patterns.

Normally, a single crochet (sc) stitch is worked by inserting the hook under 2 strands on the previous row. When worked in a dense fabric, it creates a beautiful texture, but it has a tendency to roll.

However, working a single crochet through the back loop (sc-tbl) only, creates a ribbed effect. This is a simple technique for edgings—keeping them from rolling.
