Casting on using the Long-tail Cast-on method:

Find the measurement for the piece that you will be casting on for and pull out a length of yarn at least 3 times as long as that measurement. Make a slip knot here. With a needle in your right hand, place the slip knot on the needle (the slip knot counts as one stitch) (photo 1).

*Hold up the needle and grab the both ends hanging down from the needle together with the 3 lower fingers of your left hand (photo 2).

Making sure that the yarn coming from the ball is in the back, slide your hand down, and separate the strands by putting your pointer finger and thumb in between them (photo 3).

Spread your pointer and thumb to further separate the strands (photo 4).

Pull the needle down so that one strand of yarn encircles your thumb and crosses in front of it (photo 5).

With the tip of the needle, begin from underneath, pick up the lower strand of yarn at your thumb (photo 6).

Pull it over so that you may pick up the strand at your pointer by going over it and then around and bring it back underneath the through the loop around your thumb (photo 7).

Drop the yarn off both your pointer and thumb, pull yarn until stitch is snug against needle. Repeat from * until desired number of stitches are on needles.
