Casting on at the beginning or end of a row:

When working a piece that needs stitches cast on at the beginning or end of a row there are multiple methods, two of which are the Cable Cast-on and the Single Cast-on.

Cable Cast-on Method:
The Cable Cast-on method works well when many stitches need to be cast on.

Cable Cast-on at the beginning of a row:
Step 1: *Insert right-hand needle between the first 2 stitches on the left-hand needle (photo 1).

Step 2: Wrap the yarn around the needle and pull yarn through (photo 2)

Step 3: Slip this stitch onto the left-hand needle, adding 1 stitch (photo 3).

Repeat Steps 1–3 until desired number of stitches have been cast on.

To work the Cable Cast-on at the end of a row, turn and take the needle with the stitches on it into your left hand, then work as for beginning of row Cable Cast-on.

Single Cast-on Method (aka: Backward Loop Method):
The Single Cast-on method is best when only a small number of stitches need to be cast on.

Single Cast-on at the end of a row:
Step 1: Wrap the yarn behind your left thumb and down so that you can hold it with your three lower fingers (photo 4).

Step 2: Yarn should be in front of your pointer finger. Pick up the strand of yarn, from front to back, where it runs between your three fingers and your thumb (photo 5).

Step 3: Let the yarn drop off your thumb and pull until loop is up against needle, adding 1 stitch (photo 6).

Repeat Steps 1–3 until desired number of stitches have been cast on.

To work the Single Cast-on at the beginning of a row, turn and take the needle with the stitches on it into your right hand, then work as for end of row Single Cast-on.
