Bound-Off Buttonholes

For the Provence Baby Cardigan, I placed markers on the button band to indicate where I wanted the buttons to go. Then, on the buttonhole band, I worked a 2-stitch bind off—to fit a 3⁄4” button-- opposite the marker. Here’s how:

Work the buttonhole row in pattern to the beginning of the buttonhole, bind off two stitches (knit 2, pass first stitch worked over second stitch, knit 1, pass second stitch over stitch just worked), continue in pattern to next marker. Repeat for each buttonhole

On the following row, work in pattern to the bound off stitches, cast on two stitches using the backward loop method (photo 3), and work in pattern to the end of the row.

Repeat these steps for every buttonhole and work the band until it reaches the desired length.

To make larger buttonholes, try binding off another stitch using this same technique; for smaller buttonholes, try the yarn-over technique.
