Web-Letter, Issue 90 – Cotton Bam Boo Baby Cable Hat

The weather in Portland, Maine, is waffling. For the past two weeks, it’s been trying to decide if it wants to be late winter or early spring. Today the weather has decided to tease us. It’s sunny and fresh, yes, but watch out! Come out of the house coatless, and you’ll turn around on your heel and go back in, emerging a moment later wearing a coat and, if you’re me, a scarf. It is, alas, still cold enough to make you put your hands in your pockets.

This is the time of year when a light extra layer is needed. And if you’re a baby, a soft, non-wooly hat to cover ears and a round little head is welcome. Andi Clark’s Baby Cable Hat, worked in pretty Cotton Bam Boo, is quick to knit and cute, cute, cute. If you’re not into ruffles and ribbons, scroll down to the bottom for a tailored version of this hat knitted in Summer Set, a comfy blend of cotton and a little alpaca.

The Story:

I strongly feel that every baby needs a handknitted gift to welcome her (or him) into the world. And with the warm weather finally here, it seems like there are new babies everywhere! I know of several girls who have been born recently, and a few that are still cooking, and I wanted to make something special for them.

All little heads need protection from the sun and cool weather, but little girls like to be fashionable from the start. This hat is knitted in Cotton Bam Boo, a smooth, cool, non-itchy yarn, a yarn that keeps its soft hand and drape even when it’s worked in dense little cables. The ruffly brim adds a dash of femininity, and a ribbon woven through makes the hat adjustable to fit a wide range of head sizes.

So knit up one of these little hats for the newest fashion diva in your life.  It’s never too early to show a girl the fashion ropes.

Andi Clark

The Yarns:

Cotton Bam Boo
52% cotton, 48% bamboo

Cotton Bam Boo is a blend of complimentary fibers that are spun into a smooth, sportweight yarn that’s great for baby knits. The cotton component allows the blend to knit up into a fabric that is cool, soft on the skin, and breathable. Bamboo adds drape and a soft sheen, and it's biodegradable.

Also, bamboo is derived from a renewable resource. Harvesting bamboo fiber does not result in the death of the plant; in only a few months, the same plants are ready to be harvested again. Bamboo yarn, or bamboo mixed with another natural fiber, is biodegradable.

Cotton Bam Boo has a gauge of 6 stitches per inch and great stitch definition. It comes in 22 beautiful colors.

The Stitches:

The Cotton Bam Boo Baby Cable Hat makes use of a stitch that we refer to as a baby cable. When working a baby cable, no cable needle is necessary. Instead the sts are crossed while still on the needle.
