Issue 498 – Deborah's Biking Cardigan

From Cathy Payson (CEY designer and employee in the early 90's):

It's always been an honor to work with Deborah Newton. Her designs are beautiful right from the start. Her design submissions, unlike any other designer I've ever seen, could be considered works of art that you'd easily want to frame and hang on your wall. And once her design was chosen, the sample Deborah would send, would not only be stunning, but the fit and instructions would be impeccable. I was happy to knit this updated sample of Deborah's Biking Cardigan since it's always been one of my favorites. In fact, I still own the original one I knit for myself in Cambridge about 30 years ago. Timeless – just like Deborah!

From Deborah:

I cannot remember the year I did this cardigan for the early Classic Elite, but I can remember everything about the sweater itself. It was knitted in one of my favorite yarns from that time period: "Cambridge," which was a lovely soft cotton and wool blend. I used a favorite deeply textured chevron knit/purl pattern and I remember dividing the bands with stripes of seed stitch. I think I still have my original test swatch! Cambridge was a yarn that really made texture a focus, and it had body and drape as well. As a new designer, I was happy to work with it. I tried to do something different with the front bands of this cardigan when I did the finishing: the buttonhole band was ribbing and the buttonband was seed stitch. A fun sweater to design and to knit. I am more than pleased that it has stood the test of time!
The photo on the original pattern was one of my favorites of my more than 3 decades-long career. In those early days, both Pat Chew and Kristin Nicholas were extremely supportive of my work as a young designer. They both had great instincts, offered great yarns, and I still think fondly of the work I did with them and the designs they inspired in me.

Deborah has designed many projects for Classic Elite through the years – check out another design we pulled from the archives for our Web-Letter a few years back, Issue 414.
