Issue 487 • Blackthorn Leaf Hats

Leaf Hats

The Leaf motif is a favorite of knitters. At this time of year, nearing the end of winter, leaves are a welcome sight. While the wind still blows cold enough to require a hat when you're outdoors, the leaves remind us that winter won't last forever.

Knit in bulky MountainTop Blackthorn, both of these hats will knit up in short order. Choose a single leaf on a stockinette stitch background or a ring of leaves on Reverse Stockinette stitch.

MountainTop Blackthorn

50% wool, 50% superfine alpaca
  • 3-3½ sts/inch on US 11-1½0 (8-6.5 mm) needles
  • 120 yards/100 gram hank
  • handwash cold/dry flat
  • 8 naturally undyed shades

Undyed alpaca and wool merge in a plump, squishy 100 gram hank of fiber scrumptiousness! Part of the MountainTop Collection of yarns spun from natural, undyed fibers, Blackthorn is the soft, chunky counterpart to worsted-weight Vista. The superfine alpaca makes pieces soft and warm, while the wool lends it strength.
