Classic Elite Yarns

Issue 392 – Flower Top Hat & Provence eBook

The first time I knit with Provence, many many years ago, I had to check the label after the first couple of rows. The label said it was 100% cotton but it felt so silky and smooth I thought there had to be some silk. But no, Provence is 100% silky smooth mercerized Egyptian cotton. The staple fibers of Egyptian cotton are longer than other cottons and when spun, Egyptian cotton makes a stronger more lustrous and softer yarn. Provence has been in the Classic Elite collection since the early 1990's and there are many great patterns using this yarn. We've put together an ebook of four of our favorite Provence sweaters. This ebook is free for a limited time – download before May 15, 2015 to get these great sweater patterns at no cost.

This week's free hat pattern is worked from the top down. Begun on double pointed needles, the yarn overs that form the flower shape, increase the number of stitches to the full circumference of the hat. Once you change to a circular needle, you can then slip the the stitches to waste yarn and try on to achieve the perfect fit.

The Yarn

100% Mercerized Egyptian Cotton

Provence, one of our signature yarns, is a mercerized Egyptian cotton that knits into a strong and beautiful fabric. Egyptian cotton has two qualities that make it a great cotton yarn: a very long staple (fiber) length and a small diameter. The long staple gives the yarn strength and sheen; and the delicate diameter means that it spins into a soft, smooth yarn. Mercerizing makes a yarn that is stable, takes dye well, and is less likely to shrink.
