Issue 229 – Lush Fingerless Mitts

As a functional small project to keep your hands warm and pretty, I love everything about these mitts! This pattern from Susan Mills features a bit of cabling combined with ribbing to keep the knitting interesting but not overly taxing. They're my idea of the perfect extra project to have going along with several other projects (because who can have just one!).

Made in beautiful, soft, fuzzy Lush, these mitts make a perfect gift to have on hand when you need something a little extra special. Lush was discontinued recently, sadly...angora has become much harder to find for hand-knitting yarns. You can probably still find Lush at your local yarn store, but if you have trouble finding it, read on for some other yummy suggestions!

The Yarn:

Lush
50% wool • 50% angora

Lush is a blend of wool and angora spun into a 4 ply worsted weight yarn. The wool in the mix keeps the yarn stable and sturdy and the twist of the yarn provides a bit of spring. The addition of angora makes the yarn extremely soft and cuddly and provides a lovely even halo.

If you can't find Lush, there are some alternatives. Vista and Crestone, both interchangeable themselves, would work well, as would Portland Tweed. If you would like to play with the size or gauge, look for Woodland (a little lighter) or Montera (a little heavier) to make those changes. But please remember the cardinal rule of knitting, always knit and measure out a gauge swatch! It's the only path towards knits that fit.

We recently got some feedback from a knitter who loves our yarns...she said she has trouble knowing which are "DK" and which are "worsted" when she wants a quick reference. Point taken!

We thought we'd put together a reference sheet listing all our Classic Elite brand yarns by weight in an easy-to-read chart. Once you've downloaded it, bookmark it or drag the icon in your browser's address bar to your toolbar so you'll always have it close at hand.
