Issue 219 – Diamonds Are Forever Infinity Scarf

Have you worked with Soft Linen yet? It's a touch-it-to-believe-it blend of linen, wool and baby alpaca that is best described by Clara Parkes as "a perfect example of a smart fiber blend." This is the perfect yarn when you don't want to choose which season to knit for. The blend of summery linen helps the fabric breathe and the wintry wool and baby alpaca keeps the fabric cozy.

This week, Robyn M. Schrager has shared a pattern with us that is perfect for sampling Soft Linen, and ideal for beginning lace knitters. Follow either the written or charted pattern instructions (maybe choose the method you're least comfortable with for practice!) The scarf only requires two balls of Soft Linen, but trust me – you'll definitely want a few extras in your stash.

The Yarn:

Soft Linen
35% linen • 35% wool • 30% baby alpaca

Soft Linen is the perfect yarn for warmer days and soft, cool nights. The alpaca makes a beautiful halo, the linen gives it a crisp and firm hand and the wool provides stability and its own level of softness.

This year-round yarn works equally well for lace, colorwork and textures. This makes it a particularly good choice for accessories that will get a lot of use, like hats, belts, shawls, scarves and mitts.

Not Just for Summer...

Soft Linen technically falls under the spring designation for us, but if you've ever knit with it, it becomes obvious how versatile this fiber blend is. I run hot almost all the time, so the thought of wearing a heavy wool sweater under my coat and scarf is almost unbearable, even if it's below freezing outside. Not only does this yarn knit up into perfectly breathable insulating layers, but the gauge falls right where I like it. A quick Ravelry search turned up several all-season garments in Soft Linen, adaptable to any climate.

1. Soft Linen Hoodie from ChrisRKnits.
2. Feather and Fan Cardigan from KnitsandSilks.
3. Provence Marl Empire Waist Cardigan from Nest.
4. Drape Front Cardi in an alternate color from CEY
5. Soft Linen Shawl from Sparrow31 (photo by Elizabeth Simcock).
