Web-Letter Issue 215 – MountainTop Patchwork Scarf

Sometimes I just want to knit without thinking too much. I want the calming rhythmic song of knitting to keep my hands and mind busy without having to pay close attention to a set of instructions. One day I picked up some odd balls of MountainTop Vista and Crestone, cast on a few stitches and started knitting. This patchwork scarf is the result.

After knitting a long strip of garter blocks, I was bored with garter stitch and picked up stitches along the side and began working long rows of seed stitch. I continued changing colors, patterns, or stitches randomly, as I tired of whatever color, pattern or stitch I was working. Each section builds on the already knit sections and each section has something to hold your interest – stripes, mitered triangles, ruffled or zig zag edges. The ends are finished with pom poms and i-cord fringe, just for fun.

The Vista & Crestone booklet is fast becoming our most popular booklet of the Fall 2011 collection, and with good reason! The yarns are luscious, and the designs manage to be both fashion-forward and what some might call "earthy-crunchy". The Highland Fling has gained in popularity, but this entire collection of patterns has what is arguably the most diverse range of garment types, from socks to hats to everything in between!

One of the beauties of these two yarns is their interchangeable gauges. You can use either Vista or Crestone for any of these designs, with subtle changes in texture and look. Clockwise, starting at the top left, Alpine Meadow in Crestone, Knoll in Vista, Twin Peaks in Vista, Hill and Dale in Vista and Crestone, Pinnacle in Crestone, and Highland Fling in Vista.

The Yarn

The MountainTop Collection
naturally undyed fibers

Classic Elite has always been committed to providing beautiful natural fibers to knitters and crocheters. This fall, we are once again on the cutting edge with the MountainTop Collection, the newest addition to our family of sustainable yarns.

The MountainTop Collection is made up of three yarns spun with natural undyed fibers that you have to see and feel to truly appreciate. Vista and Crestone are two interchangeable worsted weight yarns: Vista is a 50/50 blend of wool and superfine alpaca, and Crestone is 100% wool. Vail is a light fingering yarn in a blend of baby alpaca and bamboo that is pure luxury.
