Web-Letter, Issue 162 – Lush Sampler Cowl

As we all know, in our yarny world there are those who like cables best, or lace, or texture, or myriad of other stitches. Yarns aren’t any different—some yarns like certain stitches better than others. What better way to sample a skein or two than to try a variety of stitches in one project that will make great accessory or perfect gift?

Sample Lush this week with this Sampler Cowl pattern to see which stitch you think suits Lush best (and which stitch you like best!). Think of it as a gigantic, usable swatch.

The Story:

This Lush sampler cowl was an experiment. What stitch would suit this impossibly soft yarn the best? Cables, lace, texture? Rather than swatch each stitch separately, I combine them into one piece that also includes a little ribbing and a little garter stitch. After blocking the cowl, it was no surprise that every stitch and texture in the cowl was beautiful.

However, the fun with my Lush Sampler Cowl continues; this is the perfect project for my fledgling knitting friends, who are about to enter knitting boot-camp. By placing markers between each stitch transition, it is easy to separate the patterns and practice lace, texture and cables all at once!

The Yarn:

Lush
50% angora, 50% wool

Lush is a blend of wool and angora spun into a 4 ply worsted-weight yarn. The wool in the mix keeps the yarn stable and sturdy, and combined with the way that it is twisted, provides a bit of spring to the yarn.  The addition of angora makes the yarn extremely soft and cuddly and provides a lovely even halo.

Working with Lush is a pleasure—it has the hand of a luxury yarn but without the price.  Lush comes in 22 colors that range from soft and subtle to rich and bold.
