Web-Letter, Issue 159 – Pink Scarves

Statistics sometimes feel like just numbers. But in the case of a breast cancer diagnosis (not to mention other diseases being measured), they mean real people, in real health-crisis situations. Our small company is primarily staffed by women. Statistically the odds were not in our favor, and sure enough, Classic Elite has been touched – more than once – by breast cancer (1 in 8 women will face a breast cancer diagnosis in her life). In fact, it’s safe to say that everyone at our company has been touched – whether it be a sister, daughter, aunt, mother, cousin, friend or co-worker.

As homage to anyone who has faced this disease, and to the hundreds of thousands we don’t personally know, we came together for our own little pink scarf project. Ten scarves or scarf-like pieces were designed and knit by the staff at Classic Elite. I hope you enjoy these patterns, but most importantly, we want you to remember those touched by breast cancer, and if you are able, to reach out to your favorite worthy charity. A cure is a wonderful thing. But even more wonderful would be if no one would have to worry about breast cancer affecting her life. Ever.

We are happy to include three scarves in this week’s Web-Letter. Look for the other scarf patterns pictured throughout the month on our blog.

The Stories:

There are very few among us whose lives have not been touched by breast cancer. I designed this scarf in honor of all the courageous women that I know that have confronted this awful disease with incredible strength, courage, and grace. It is also in honor of those who continue the struggle day to day and in remembrance of those that we have lost. Together we can make a difference in this fight and be victorious soon.

I'm a new knitter, relatively. I count my knitting time in years (on one hand) not decades. As such, I have heaps of scarves in my closet--all trophies for learning a new technique or stitch. I loved the idea of a pink scarf for breast cancer awareness, but broadly interpreted "scarf" as "neck accessory" and designed a shawl.

I knit my pink Princess shawl until it was about the right size and ended with a bit of a border. The tulip lace repeat is quite simple and will work for many sizes; just work the repeat an even number of times and finish with the border pattern.  A simple shawl for a noble cause.

One day at lunch, Betsy mentioned she would like us to design and knit a pink scarf for breast cancer awareness month. Every October for the past couple of years it has been pink in our house. I have two daughters and we always get pink streaks in our hair, pink nails and wear our pink clothes and now we also have three pink scarves.

The scarves I knit are simple because I am not an expert knitter like my co-workers. I am wearing the Margaret scarf. My daughter Margaret has a taste for cashmere, so I designed a scarf for her in Ariosa.

Look for patterns for the other scarves I knit, modeled by Susan and Terri (the Grace and the Pattie, respectively), later this month on the CEY blog.
