Web-Letter, Issue 138 – Knitscene Easy

The latest issue of KnitScene from Interweave Press is a special issue—KnitScene Easy. It's targeted at new knitters and has loads of instructions (on seaming, increasing, decreasing, etc…) mixed in with the simple, yet stylish, projects. Most projects are quick and easy—perfect for this time of year when many of us are spending more time outdoors than we are knitting.

Susan Mills
Creative Director

The Story:

In the debut issue of KnitScene Easy there are a bunch of projects using Classic Elite yarns—the Waterlily scarf, shown on the cover; the Ariosa hat which is shown in two colors and styled three different ways on the last page; and a tube top in Sprout. Featured on the back cover is an adorable shrug—also knit in Sprout. Find that pattern in our new booklet, Beach.

The Waterlily scarf is garter stitch, knit end to end, with increases to the widest point then decreases back to a thin point, along one edge. A slit at one end allows for easy tying. Designed by Cecily Glowik MacDonald.

Find this design on Ravelry.

The Ariosa hat is also garter stitch, knit flat, with the seaming yarn pulled tightly to form a gather along the seam. It's then embellished with buttons, a brooch or a ribbon. Also designed by Cecily Glowik MacDonald.

The Sprout tube top is knit in 2 rectangles, worked from the top down, in St st with a 4" deep Garter section at bottom edge, and seamed along the sides, with the bottom edges left unsewn for side slits. Designed by Cathy Carron.

The Yarn:

Waterlily
100% extra fine merino

100% extra fine merino gives Waterlily a fun, bounce and stretchy elasticity. The tight twist of 8 plies of yarn, gives great stitch definition—great for cables and textured stitches. The subtle tone-on-tone dye effect throughout the ball of yarn creates a weathered, rustic effect. It's currently available in 18 colorways ranging from brights to faded tonals.

Ariosa
90% extra fine merino,
10% cashmere

Although Ariosa is composed of wonderfully warm fibers, it's not a heavy yarn. The gentle twist allows lots of air between the fibers, keeping it lofty and light. Ariosa knits up between 3½ and 4 stitches per inch.

Even though it is not tightly twisted, stitches knit in Ariosa are smooth enough to show off stich patterns beautifully.

Sprout
100% organic cotton

Sprout is a chunky, organic cotton yarn. It is formed by twisting a thin cotton thread around a barely spun lofty strand to yield a slightly bumpy texture. The thick ply allows the cotton to knit up at a bulky gauge while remaining light and the thin ply keeps the yarn strong and stable.

Sprout is available in a bright-and-lively 19-color palette and it’s machine washable. Add to this the wonderful soft texture, strength, and the light, yet quick-to-knit, gauge and it is easy to see why Sprout makes a great choice for quick summer knits.
